Re: hiring family member question Jennifer Shambrook 15 Aug 2005 14:15 EST

You should follow your own institution's rules concerning this issue. Some friendly advice: It would probably be best to have your son report to someone else for both his sake and yours... let alone the sake of what's perceived as proper.

Additionally, you should still advertise the position and interview, involving others in the interview process. It would, of course, be very hard to be objective, however there might be others with the same or better qualifications.

Another issue you might consider is the effect it might have in his peer relationships in your department. You might want to have those people involved in the interview process. If he is clearly the best candidate, they will be able to see this. If he's not, then, hopefully, you'll be able to see it as well.

Good luck!

Dr. B and I each have been looking to hire a 10-hour a week
office/instructional technology assistant. We have found the perfect
person - he is a student: he is an information technology major, he
has experience with both Blackboard and WebCT, knows web design, Outlook
and all Office applications like the back of his hand, can fix any
computer problem known to folks in education, has worked with the
Polycom videoconferencing system, worked for others in the department
for one semester doing troubleshooting, has assisted students in
Lexington with distance ed and Blackboard questions, and has served as a
peer instructor for the chemistry department. There is just one glitch.
He's my son (who lives with his father when he's not living on campus).
He moves into his own apartment next week.) I would love to start him
on my grant asap to help us set up our classes this week. That may not
be possible but I thought I would at least put that desire out on the
table. Dr. A

Additional information: Drs. A and B each have their own
sole-investigator awards. Dr. B can hire student.

I know of a similar situation, but in that case, there were co-PI's with
reporting structure defined as having the employee report to the
non-family member co-PI.

Question: Can the student be hired to work on Dr. A's grant?
Can he work on the grant if a co-PI is added?
