Coping with overload of IRB reviews Pate, Carolyn I 08 Aug 2005 10:21 EST

We are a medium-sized university (27,000 students), no medical research,
and only one IRB, which reviews protocols from both students (mostly
undergraduates) and faculty. The student applications are 99% "benign,"
but are also about 99% of the IRB workload! And our IRB is weighed down
by these submissions. We also have not allowed our compliance officer to
review any of the protocols, in order to avoid even a perceived conflict
of interest.

Do any of you allow your staff to review such protocols? If not, why
not? If so, how does that staff member conduct the review? Using a
matrix? Are you pleased with the process, whichever way you do it? And
why or why not?

If you wish to answer off-line, that's fine.

If any of you would like a summary of the responses, let me know.
