Article on R&D funding cuts kma7850u 28 Jul 2005 09:41 EST

Hello all --

The Wall Street Journal had an interesting opinion piece yesterday titled,
"America Gasps for Breath in the R&D Marathon." It criticizes cuts in the
federal R&D budget, arguing that this will reduce the nation's future
competitiveness in global markets. It gives a good overview of how our R&D
spending compares to that in other countries and its implications for
industry, jobs, etc.

What especially interested me was that it wasn't written by a college
president. The authors were the chairman of the board for the Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the president of the
Information Technology Association of America.

I can't post it to the list because of copyright restrictions. I didn't see
the paper until last night, which is why I'm mentioning it today instead of
yesterday, when it would have been easier to buy a copy. But it is worth
reading if you can get a copy at your institution's library.
