Laurie, the following is the UW procedure. To fulfill this NSF requirement, faculty salaries, if available from non-federal sources, should be pledged. This 1% cost sharing for the total project should be pledged during the first year of the proposal. For example, if a NSF sponsored project is requested for three years at $100,000 each year, which is a total project cost of $300,000, 1% of $300,000, or $3,000 in aggregate cost sharing from faculty salaries should be pledged during the first year of the project. If none is available (where faculty are fully paid from federal sources) note and explain on the GC-1 form and proceed without a cost sharing pledge. If some faculty in the department can't cost share, a maximum of 2% aggregate cost sharing can be pledged for those faculty members who can. Remember this is only required on unsolicited proposals.
