They did the same thing on our campus.  Our student union "rents" space for
conferences, etc.  Several people contacted me, and I just told them that I
knew nothing about it and that we were NOT sponsoring it.

I did not hear any feedback later re:  attendance, etc.

Yes, I think it's very misleading and a bad business practice, but I expect
especially  institutions will always be subject to this sort of thing if we
make certain space available to the public.

Another question we had was where did they get the mailing list for our
faculty?
