Recognition programs Lori Messer 24 Nov 2004 09:46 EST

Based on Cathy's response yesterday I thought it might be helpful if I
post what we already do at Wake Forest University to recognize the
scholarly activities of our faculty.

First we send a congratulatory letter to all those receiving externally
sponsored awards. This letter is signed by the Director of Research &
Sponsored Programs (me) and our Provost. Our Associate Provost for
Research sends a handwritten note as well.

We send copies of this letter to our Media Relations and Creative
Services Departments for additional publicity opportunities. In
addition, Creative Services maintains a website called "Faculty Focus"
which lists all sponsored awards, fellowships, books, exhibitions, etc.

My office publishes a newsletter 3 times a year. We include all awards
and fellowships (of which we are aware) for the previous few months.
Because fellowships do not come through our office we rely on the
recipients to communicate this information with us.

Finally, recovered F&A is invested back into the research infrastructure
based on the areas that generated the initial F&A. We also fund
internal (competitive) award programs. FYI - We have a separate
internal award program for Arts & Humanities.

We are planning to have a recognition program (dinner?) to celebrate and
recognize faculty that routinely work with my office (what I called
mistakenly called research active) and faculty who have published books,
had an exhibition of their creative works, received a fellowship etc.
We have had wine and cheese type events in the past but then only
invited awardees. I think the consensus from the list has been to
invite all who submit as well. I want to thank everyone for their
contributions. There certainly are a lot of interesting/creative
happenings at other universities (esp. Maine!).
