Then we in the research community are not doing OUR part to let the public know what our sponsors are funding us to do. Not only do we need to be giving acknowledgements in scientific journals to our funding sources, we also need to be letting our local communities know what we're doing, how it benefits mankind, and who's footing the bill.
The money originates with the public. If the public only hears about us when one of the scientists misbehaves, then we can quickly lose public sentiment. And politicians are politicians. They're going to fund what keeps their seats in office based upon public sentiment.
