Money.

It probably costs less to go from Seattle to Vancouver, Burlington to Montreal, and Houston to Mexico City than it does to go from Portland ME to San Diego or Madison Wisc to Honolulu.

We are a big country with a challenging geography.  [One must travel east to get from Reno to LA.]
