Re: Whose money is this? Ernest W. Johnson 18 Aug 2004 07:53 EST

Roberta, At Penn State's Hershey Medical Center, we have evolved a
cooperative and generally harmonious relationship with our University
Development office over more than a decade. We provide them with basic
information on all new grant and contract awards every month and they
involve us when "gifts" are proposed that would come with some strings
attached. The result is that our Research office negotiates, tracks and
reports all grant and contract awards and University Development focuses
primarily on other types of fundraising including gifts from donors and
awards from corporate and foundation sponsors. In addition, University
Development periodically refers special grant/contract funding leads to us
and we help them identify investigators with expertise of interest to
potential donors and occasionally prepare proposals for special types of
funding opportunities. Although this results in some duplicate reporting,
that is openly acknowledged and it is recognized that our end-of-the-year
numbers are not simply additive. In summary, we don't compete with our
University Development office, we cooperate- and this approach has worked
well not only for both offices but also for the University which has been
the real beneficiary. I hope our experience will be helpful to
you. Regards, Ernie
