Start Up Costs (Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine and Performing Arts) Michael Owen 17 Feb 2004 18:46 EST

Dear Colleagues

I have been asked to obtain information on practices related to
start-up costs for faculty members in the social sciences (including
Education, Business, etc.), humanities and fine and performing arts.
I have some relatively simple questions.

Please send your responses to me directly. I will collate and post on the list.

Does your institution provide standard start-up grants for new
faculty in these disciplines?
 * All disciplines
 * Some disciplines
 * Are these standard or negotiated individually with the Dean/Chair,
 VP Academic or VP/AVP Research?

If yes, what is the range of these grants?
 * Humanities:
 * Social Sciences (non-experimental)
 * Fine and Performing Arts

Do the grants cover equipment and infrastructure? operating (e.g.,
graduate students, travel, books, materials and supplies)?

Are the grants single awards or multi-year?

Do humanities, social science and fine and performing arts faculty
members also have access to other research funds (e.g., internally
adjudicated research or travel grants)?
 * If yes, are these internal funds specific to these
disciplines or institution-wide competitions?
 * Are there limits on the level of these awards (e.g.,
$10,000)? on the frequency of
 application (e.g., once every three years)?

Is your institution:
 PUI/Liberal Arts College
 Minority Institution
 Comprehensive University
 Medical/Doctoral
 Other

Any additional comments:

Thank you,

Michael
