I LOVE IT!!!! This is the sort of thing that would have happened up
here. Ummm..... We've had lost equipment that was found, and we we're
asked to pay for it to get it back (law of sea, salvage rights, etc...),
or at least pay for the storage fees that the organization that found it
incurred (they were looking to skin a perceived fat hog - UAF. We're a
pretty lean organization, much to their dismay) if we wanted it back.
This all happened right before I started working in this field, so I
didn't have to solve this one, I just participated peripherally. So....
I would say that vaguely similar things have happened before.
Asking if your risk office would participate is a brilliant suggestion.
Depending on the sponsor, you might be able to get permission. Maybe
treat it as an honorarium... No, that's not a good idea, it doesn't
really qualify.
Knowing how EXPENSIVE those pieces of oceanography equipment can be,
paying $1,000 to get it back is probably less than the deductible you
would have paid (if it was covered by insurance). I really think that
angle of approach is inspired.
I always shy away from consultancy fees because they don't easily pass
my smell test, but I think that's a good idea too.
Good luck!
