Re: Grant tracking software (again) Amy Hibbard 11 Sep 2003 16:00 EST
I almost forgot! Someone brought up an interesting point about using open-source software for grant tracking. Here are some links & info from Dave, College of Charleston, for open-source software his office uses: Mozilla <http://www.mozilla.org/> This is an excellent web browser/email client that also includes options for office calendaring. The mail client is much less susceptible to viri infection that Outlook (IMAP & POP are both supported) and the browser is not nearly as susceptible to "hidden" code as IE. (This is the core of Netscape without the advertisements for AOL, etc.) EZDB <http://www.ezperl.com/> This is a PERL relational database (for your web server) that is totally web-oriented. (The NCURA Region III web site feeds out of this database) Data can easily be imported into Excel, Access, or another data managers, also, for reporting. All data entry is via a web browser. All data is accessible via a web browser, also. StarOffice <http://wwws.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0/> Sun Microsystems' StarOffice is an acceptable replacement for MS Office. It may lack a few features but it is totally free. The package includes word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, graphics, and database capabilities. My eyes glazed a bit when I read through this, but I'm sure there the more technically-savvy of you will be able to appreciate this better. <grin> Thanks again to everyone who has responded, and I hope this helps, -Amy -----Original Message----- From: Boggs, Paul [mailto:xxxxxx@letu.edu] Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2003 1:14 PM To: xxxxxx@hrinet.org Subject: Re: [RESADM-L] Grant tracking software Amy, Did you get any response to your request? -Paul ******************************** Paul Boggs Director, Office of Sponsored Programs Voice: 903-233-3981 Fax: 903-233-3910 -----Original Message----- From: Amy Hibbard [mailto:xxxxxx@KGI.EDU] Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2003 2:32 PM To: xxxxxx@HRINET.ORG Subject: [RESADM-L] Grant tracking software Hello all- We've recently been considering purchasing software to help with grant tracking, and I was hoping I could pick your brains for a short list of good products. I've looked into a few, but the demo can only show you so much. We're a small school, so we don't need the luxury package, but something that would allow expense tracking and perhaps keep track of subcontract invoices and reporting dates would make my life less stressful. Thanks for the use of your brains, -Amy PS - If you have a tracking software cautionary tale, that would help, too.
