Our institution hires postdoctoral associates in ecology to work for a two year period.  We are beginning to experience problems when these postdocs are foreign nationals.

They are entering the country on J1 visas but do not have social security numbers.  Without a social security number we cannot put them on our payroll.  Social security tells us that it takes 4 months after they are in the country to be able to get a number.

I would appreciate it if you could share with me the procedures you use to pay foreign nationals when they intern at your institution.
