Hi-
I'm trying to write something about scientific independence.
Does anyone have any stories, preferably true, of that truly creative, paradigm-breaking scientist who spends years asking the major patrons (e.g. NIH or NSF) for support, is continually rejected, but perseveres, and then, lo and behold, is appreciated by someone with money (e.g. MacArthur Fdn) and eventually by many more?
Ben Franklin comes to mind (everyone thought lightning was divine wrath) but he didn't need a grant and I'd prefer something more recent.
Thanks.
Charlie
