Director, Office of Sponsored Research
Rice University invites nominations and application for the position
of Director, Office of Sponsored Research. Rice, a private AAU-member
institution, is consistently ranked among the nation's leading
research-intensive universities and has annual research funding of
over $55 million. Rice combines strong academic and research programs
to create a vibrant scholarly community that includes approximately
2700 undergraduates, 1900 graduate students and 511 full time faculty.
The Director reports to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate
Studies and is responsible for overseeing university pre-award and
non-financial post award activities for grants, contracts and other
agreements from external sponsors. A major responsibility of the
Director is to review and negotiate agreements, including
subcontracts, on behalf of the University as well as to manage and
assure university compliance with all regulations and contractual
agreements. The Director has a leadership role in fostering
relationships with Federal or other government agencies and other
external sponsors.
The Director oversees a staff that is responsible for assisting
university researchers in proposal development and preparation, in
the identification of sources of funding, and in presentation of
educational and training programs for faculty, other principal
investigators and department staff.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree with at least ten years experience in
university grants and contracts administration and five years
management experience. Thorough knowledge of federal agency policies,
rules, and regulations. Experience in negotiating agreements with
government and industrial sponsors. Knowledge of issues, guidelines,
regulations and laws that relate to intellectual property and
technology transfer within a university environment. Cognizance of
issues relating to a potential for conflict of interests for
personnel participating in a sponsored project. Sufficient knowledge
of computer applications to provide leadership in continuous efforts
to improve the operations and efficiency of the Office of Sponsored
Research including its data bases and processes for electronic grant
preparation, routing and submission.
