Graduate tuition waivers vs remission Wilma Ennenga 25 Jun 2003 19:34 EST

I would appreciate information about how tuition benefits are handled for
graduate research and/or teaching assistants on sponsored projects versus
those who are paid with institutional funds. I have the following questions:

1. Does your institution provide a tuition waiver to Graduate Research and
Teaching Assistants, or do you remit tuition, or some combination of the two?

2. If you provide a tuition waiver, then I assume you are not charging
sponsored projects for tuition?

3. If you remit tuition, who pays for the tuition benefit for assistants
supported by institutional funds?

4. Does your institution distinguish between Graduate Research Assistants
and Graduate Teaching Assistants, and is this a consideration in whether a
waiver or remission of tuition is provided?

5. Does your institution consider this a fringe benefit, or handle it
another way?

Please feel free to respond to me directly or through the listserve. Thanks
very much,

Winnie Ennenga
