POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, IUP RESEARCH INSTITUTE The IUP Research Institute is a new non-profit corporation affiliated with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Its purpose is to promote research and other externally funded projects, with a focus on applied research and partnerships with community and regional programs. Externally funded research has grown steadily for the past 10 years, and the University is seeking an enterprising individual to take research and other externally funded projects to the next stage of development by implementing the new Research Institute. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies. The Executive Director has general responsibility for the start-up and management of the Research Institute as it serves Indiana University of PA faculty and staff. The Executive Director establishes objectives and priorities and develops short-term and long-range plans for all Research Institute units. MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Graduate degree in an academic or professional field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED AND DESIRED Management and administrative experience in a large or mid-size university is required, preferably in a senior management position. Experience highly desired in designing start-up organizations, corporate management, organizational change and management, non-profit organizations, sponsored program management, contract and grant administration and development, federal research regulations, fiscal services, corporate and other partnerships, and research regulatory and compliance strategies. Demonstrated success in fulfilling the values and mission of a comparable organization and an understanding of the role of research in supporting the institutional mission of the University. Experience and/or knowledge of the installation and management of computerized information and data management systems is also desired. SUMMARY OF DUTIES The Executive Director is responsible for guiding the development of this new Research Institute, including its structure, policies and procedures, interaction with the University, and assessment of effectiveness. S/he will have overall day-to-day responsibility for effective management and operation of all areas of the Institute as they discharge their responsibility for creating and maintaining the services necessary to facilitate the development and administration of sponsored research programs and related activities. SPECIFIC DUTIES 30% Supervises all Research Institute units. Determines and implements the optimal organization for the new Institute. Guides and coordinates communication among and activities of all areas of the Research Institute. 25% Provides decision-making assistance, information, and problem solving to faculty, University administrators, and sponsoring agency representatives related to sponsored project activity. 15% Develops the Research Institute budget and monitors expenditures of Research Institute departments 10% Monitors finances and reserve and sponsored programs contingency accounts. Monitors and modifies internal organizational operations as appropriate; initiates systems for evaluation and control of Research Institute activities including standards for performance, and evaluates individual and group performance. 5% Responsible for the management of staff involved in audits of financial, procurement, equipment, cost sharing and computer systems. Prepares or approves management responses and other documents involving audits 5% Serves on appropriate University and Research Institute committees to plan and coordinate the operating objectives, goals, plans, policies, and procedures relative to the research mission of the Institute and the University. 5% Oversees the preparation for quarterly Research Institute Board meetings. Reports quarterly to the Board on the activities of the Institute. 5% Develops and maintains relationships with administrative counterparts in universities, and national organizations representing universities to improve relationships with sponsoring agencies and institutions of higher education, and entities essential to effective operation; serves on local, state, and national committees.
