Perhaps a quick fix would be to do something like this:

PI name
a-smith
b-jones
c-white
etc.

or

PI name
1-smith
2-jones
3-white
etc.

in this way, the a,b,c or 1,2,3 would be alphabetized maintaining the intended order.  If the PI is listed first anyway, no prefix is needed.
