IACUC question Donna Berger 21 May 2003 14:05 EST

Hi everyone - I have an unusual situtation and would like your advice.

One of our faculty members has an R-21 NIH grant and she is now submitting
a proposal for a minority supplement to fund a student to work on the
project. The original application did not involve research with vertebrate
animals. (Our College does not have a federally recognized IACUC.) However,
the supplement cover sheet states that there will be vertebrate animal
research and includes an animal welfare assurance number and IACUC approval
date. The IACUC number apparently came from the collaborating institution,
however, we have no documentation of this. What type of documentation do
we need to require of our PI? Also, is there a potential problem when
the original research did not include vertebrate animal research?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
