While I am intrigued and puzzled by Charlie's experience with fish and rats,
and its relationship to this business (!), I do think he is right about a
degree not being necessary - especially an advanced degree. (Susan's
requirements may be extreme in some circumstances, but each school is
different.) I don't really think a Masters is necessary for this job. I
think a BA/BS degree might be important to establish credibility with
faculty, but in the end, the qualities that really count are accuracy,
efficiency, attention to detail, intelligence, excellent ethics, ability to
work with others, ability to work under the stress of deadlines and other
factors - not really stuff you can get a degree for, except in the School of
Life!

Subject: Re: [RESADM-L] qualifications for research admin
I disagree. Aren't most faculty members interested in good service above
all else? I think most people, even in an environment that, on the surface,
seems defined by academic credentials, look at intelligence, credibility,
and work ethic above all else. What difference does a degree make? My years
spent chopping up fish and rats didn't help me in "supervising others,
assisting faculty to develop proposals, including interpreting guidelines,
setting up and monitoring accounts & expenditures, advising on compliance
issues".
