This is my first posting, so please be kind.

I've been asked to research how other institutions deal with the
proliferation of research centers and institutes on their campuses.  We
would like to discover or invent a sequence of naming levels, so to speak,
that would define the progression of such units from simple to complex ...
for example, Laboratory--Program--Center--Institute--Consortium.  The
Laboratory would be the smallest, least complex of such units, maybe one or
two people; a Consortium would probably involve several institutions
working on a major project.

If anyone can offer suggestions for this effort, please send them to
xxxxxx@olemiss.edu, along with any web resources or models.  If you think
it's hopeless, tell me that too.  If others are interested, I'll be glad to
compile and share the results with the list.  Thanks in advance  ...
