Microfilming or optical storage of some sort (CD, PDF, etc.) would be
acceptable as a primary storage option. This would alleviate the need
to store massive amounts of paper documentation. If the sponsor came in
and did an interim audit, and, as a result of that, you were given
authorization to discard those documents, you could do that, too. That
would preclude the need to store any docs, paper or otherwise.
Of course, you could also increase the R value of your attics, too, and
just keep the paper.
