Re: What is 100%? Jane E. Prudhomme 30 Jan 2003 18:15 EST

At University of New Orleans, we consider full time to be fall & spring
semesters, 4 "units" each semester. One unit = 1 course (or, 1/8). The
majority of the "research faculty" have a 2/2 course load, which means
theoretically 50% of their time/effort is available for research,
supervising theses/dissertations, and service. Having said that, we do
have some faculty who, due to their own constraints, may budget for smaller
(or different) increments depending on their circumstances. For example,
1/9 (instead of 1/8), or 10% (instead of 25%), or whatever suits their
needs. As long as this time is "available" and we have a Chair and Dean's
signature saying so, we'll let that go.

At College of Charleston, faculty carry a 12- hour (4 course) load each
semester. For faculty evaluation purposes, teaching is generally
considered to be 80% of the faculty member's time/effort, with the
remaining 20% being devoted to a combination of research and service.
However, in budgeting for grants, we figure one course release at 1/8
of salary. So we seem to be saying two different things for different
purposes. But that was the way it was when I got here ten years ago and
looking at pros and cons of changing it has just not been a priority.
So the results of this query will be interesting....
