Northwestern University is a research intensive private university with
campuses in both Evanston and Chicago Illinois. We are currently looking
for an experienced, dynamic and energetic senior research administrator to
join our team as Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
Chicago Campus. Located between Lake Michigan and North Michigan Avenue,
Northwesterns Chicago campus includes approximately 1,900 full-time
students and 1,200 full time faculty in the School of Law and The Feinberg
School of Medicine. Several hospitals of the McGaw Medical Center of
Northwestern University, including Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the
Rehabilitation of Chicago, and Lakeside Veterans Administration, are also
located on the Chicago campus. In fiscal year 2002, the University received
approximately $324.5 million in sponsored awards, more than half
attributable to Chicago campus researchers.
DIRECTOR
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS (ORSP) CHICAGO CAMPUS
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
Responsibilities:
The Director, Chicago Campus is responsible for all aspects of pre-award
and post-award non-financial management for the more than $163 million in
sponsored projects for the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Law School,
including policy development and implementation; outreach to faculty and
administrative staff through training, presentations, frequent informal
communications, and continued web development; and outreach to federal
agencies and other institutions to help set the national research agenda
and solve common problems. Serves as the Institutional Official in all
pre-award and post-award non-financial grants management areas, including
signature authority on all Chicago Campus proposals, awards, and other
documents related to sponsored project administration. Serves as a member
of the ORSP Management team, which engages in strategic planning, policy
development, training, budget planning and maintaining consistency in
procedures and service delivery across both campuses.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in business, public administration, social sciences,
technical/scientific field or equivalent experience required. Graduate or
professional degree in law, business administration or public
administration preferred. Previous work experience (at least five years)
must have been in the administration of sponsored research at an
educational institution (preferably a medical school), in the Federal
Government, or at some other entity engaged in sponsored research. Ability
to supervise and motivate professional and administrative support staff in
a team environment. Working knowledge of general management principles and
practices, skill in dealing with others in work relationships involving
mentoring, conflict resolutions, and the ability to make difficult
decisions. Experience negotiating government and industrial contracts,
including clinical trials. Demonstrated knowledge of federal policies
governing the administration of contracts, grants cooperative agreements,
and subcontracts at educational institutions, and the accompanying
compliance mandates. Knowledge of copyright and patent law and demonstrated
understanding of the technical and legal issues affecting protection, use
and disposition of intellectual property. Experience in the utilization,
development and implementation of management information systems as well as
with agency electronic systems. Proven ability to produce and deliver
educational curriculum and complex information on technical issues to a
diverse audience at all levels of the Institution. Excellent oral and
written communication skills and the ability to work efficiently and
effectively under deadline pressures are critical. Strong service
orientation is necessary.
