Robert:
Our IRB is chaired by a senior administrator outside of the SRO, but our office
does handle the coordination: setting up meetings, making review copies of
protocols, maintaining the files and notifying researchers of decisions. The
Director of the SRO used to be the Chair, but we were told that the OHRP would
not approve our assurance because that was seen as a conflict. The
"coordination" function seems to be okay, though and it is definitely arm's
length. The senior administrator mentioned earlier is the VP Student Affairs.
He has nothing to do with research on our campus, other than this role. To give
you an idea of our size, we review approximately 30-40 protocols per year.
Hope this helps,
Rebecca Sutcliffe, Acting Director
Division of Research (SRO)
Clarkson University
