A better option than unsubscribing would be to just pause the emails while
you are away (sort of like tellig the newspaper company to not deliver
while you vacation in Florida!). To do this, you email xxxxxx@HRINET org
with the following in the BODY of the note:
SET RESADM-L NOMAIL
Then, when you return, you:
SET RESADM-L MAIL (or DIGEST)
That way, you can use whatever vacation program or Out Of Office setting
you want and don't have to worry about it responding to list messages. In
RESADM-L's (and most other lists's) case, you can then read the postings
you missed on the list archives on the web site.

Considering the wide variety of email programs in use, I don't think all of
them support the feature that you describe in Lotus Notes. Some of us have
no choice but to use UNIX commands for vacation messages. I'm no UNIX
expert so perhaps there is a way to do it.
The real problem is that, even if it were possible in all email programs,
writing understandable instructions for them all would be quite
daunting. Here at USC, we just unsubscribe from the list while on extended
leave.
