Considering the wide variety of email programs in use, I don't think all of
them support the feature that you describe in Lotus Notes.  Some of us have
no choice but to use UNIX commands for vacation messages.  I'm no UNIX
expert so perhaps there is a way to do it.

The real problem is that, even if it were possible in all email programs,
writing understandable instructions for them all would be quite
daunting.  Here at USC, we just unsubscribe from the list while on extended
leave.
