Re: Recruiting Postdoc Associates Jackie Givens 16 Jul 2002 15:35 EST
Geri . . . we are a primarily undergraduate institution that has hired post-docs for one of our professors with funded research from NIH. We had to go through the normal institutional hiring practices. . . which meant drawing up a job description, and advertising the position. In both instances I think the researcher had some possible candidates in mind, but had to advertise and interview candidates as per our hiring practices. There was no search committee for this level position, strictly up to the researcher. One thing we did have to do was show justification for the salary . . . had to find comparable positions with salary ranges for our personnel people who had no experience with post-docs. Hope this helps . . . His original budget included two graduate students, but NSF had him change it to one postoc associate. As a primarily undergraduate institution, we have almost no experience in hiring postocs. My question is, how do your institutions handle the recruiting of postdocs in research appointments? The PI says that, in his experience at other institutions (and as a postdoc himself), recruitment handled in an informal way--the PI asks colleagues at other institutions if they have any reasonable candidates for the position, then selecting who he feels is the best of the bunch. Our Equal Opportunity Center has a different idea--full recruiting process, search committees, process evaluations, etc. Even though the postdoc hired on the grant would be an employee as opposed to a trainee, have any of you been able to bypass the standard recruitment procedures?
