Recruiting Postdoc Associates Geri Walker 16 Jul 2002 14:05 EST

One of our biology professors just received a three-year grant from NSF.
His original budget included two graduate students, but NSF had him change
it to one postoc associate. As a primarily undergraduate institution, we
have almost no experience in hiring postocs. My question is, how do your
institutions handle the recruiting of postdocs in research appointments?
The PI says that, in his experience at other institutions (and as a postdoc
himself), recruitment handled in an informal way--the PI asks colleagues at
other institutions if they have any reasonable candidates for the position,
then selecting who he feels is the best of the bunch. Our Equal
Opportunity Center has a different idea--full recruiting process, search
committees, process evaluations, etc.

Even though the postdoc hired on the grant would be an employee as opposed
to a trainee, have any of you been able to bypass the standard recruitment
procedures? You can reply directly to xxxxxx@cc.wwu.edu.
