Dear Bud:

Our committee is appointed by the University Senate Committee on Committees
and is a broadly-based, peer review committee comprised of faculty who are
eligible for our summer research award program.  We receive 45-70 proposals
each year for 20 awards.  We try for all-around balance, but do not base
"close reading" assignments strictly on discipline.  We make it clear that
this is an eclectic group, and that proposals need to speak to a broad
audience.  We get high quality proposals and are satisfied that this
process works.  Sometimes these things can get so fine tuned that the
