Diana,

Thanks. This has been very helpful. Am I to assume that when you do a report
of money received (awards) that you do so based on the % credit and not
necessarily on the home unit?

Ed,

We allow credit to be distributed among all investigators listed on our
Proposal Transmittal Form. We allow each investigator to give credit to two
depts. While our fields on the proposal transmittal form say "home unit" and
"work unit", the investigators are not required to list their tenure
departments as "home." They can give credit to any two departments they
choose, although this normally works out that the home unit is their tenure
dept. The work dept is usually understood to be where the actual work is
being conducted, but that's not required either. Interdisciplinary
centers/institutes are treated as if they were departments as well.

We also use this distribution of credit in the formula for indirect cost
distributions back to colleges and departments.

You can see a copy of our Proposal Transittal Form and instructions (with
examples) on filling it out at

Subject: [RESADM-L] Proportionally Crediting Awards

We have traditionally credited all award dollars (and pending proposals) to
the Principal Investigators primary department as identified on our internal
routing form. Recently a couple of our colleges have asked that we modify
that procedure to split the credit for awards among multiple
co-investigators and their designated departments based on percentage
allocation that would be agreed to on the internal approval form. Another
suggestion has been to allocate all award credit to the principal
investigators tenure department and not allow non-tenure granting
interdisciplinary centers to receive credit for awards. Does anyone split
award credit for a single award among multiple departments? Do you have a
mechanism for crediting an interdisciplinary center and an academic
department for the same award activity?
