NSF and Academic Year Effort Eleanor M. Cicinsky 18 Feb 2002 16:05 EST

I would like to know what your institution does about requesting
Academic Year Salary Support from NSF on a Research Project.
According to Page 13 of the Grant Proposal Guide, "NSF regards research
as one of the normal functions of faculty members at institutions of
higher education. Compensation for time normally spent on research
within the term of appointment is deemed to be included within the
faculty member's regular organizational salary". We have always read
this to mean that on research projects, NSF is not keen on providing
Academic Year Salary in addition to Summer Support (maximum of 2/9).
The Policy Manual however, provides a different interpretation and
really does not talk about the normal functions of faculty members.

So, do you request AY salary and get it? Do you request it and then
it is denied or do you not request it at all and it becomes a
contribution?

I look forward to your responses.
