I have seen overload policies that appear to work. They do not increase
the base pay; they merely allow payment of a supplement for an identified
overload. Most limit it to one semester. They all require approval at a
high level of academic management. They could not be used to augment
faculty salary for taking on a federal sponsored program except in the
unusual case where the overload results from the federal project and the
project is very time constrained. Even then, I would strongly consider, if
a case arose where we'd want to apply it to federal funding, having
recognition of the unusual overload nature written into the funding instrument.
