Thanks to all who responded to my Gift vs. Grant question. We are developing
policy. I still don't believe that the absence of a policy means we can just
do what we want to do with a check that comes in the mail unlinked to a
sponsored program or gift letter. But we're going to entertain the idea of
putting a policy in place with the Foundation. I think it's probably a good
idea. Some of you have very clear policies and I intend to borrow your
ideas. Thanks.
Policy or not, I think we still need to be conscientious and careful. I
guess the word "policy" and a bunch of do's and don'ts written down after it
gives the ideas and rules some sort of legitimacy. I am daily amazed by the
phrase, "show me the policy" and how it gets people what they want. People
get what they want and it might not be too smart.
