IDC allocation responses Amy Hibbard 26 Oct 2001 11:45 EST

Happy Friday!

Many thanks to all of you who responded to my question regarding indirect
cost recovery allocation. Your responses will be a great help as we
continue to discuss our policies.

As a side note, I was particularly struck by how varied the responses were,
and how passionate you all were in your response to how institutions treat
recovered IDC. Our institution is still in the start-up phase, so we have
been using all of our recovered IDC to offset operation costs. My
impression is that this practice is not the norm, and that allocation of
funds is a sore point for many institutions.

If you don't mind sharing your thoughts, I'm interested in what pitfalls you
have encountered with IDC allocation. Is this experience different at
private institutions than at public institutions? What are the different
viewpoints: SRO, faculty, administration, etc.? How have you been able to
overcome some of these obstacles?

I'm sorry to poke at an obvious sore spot, but your observations may help me
make this process smoother than if I were to go into it with blinders on.
Thank you,
-Amy
