Re: Help - IRB Training MDaniel@xxxxxx 29 Aug 2001 14:46 EST

Hi, Mary,

the IRB training and IRB adminstration issues at predominantly undergraduate
institutions would make an excellent session for one of our professional
organizations. Not that the training issues are not a universal concern, but
it occurs to me that the challenges of education and training at smaller
institutions or institutions with primarily social/behavioral research
projects are frequently overshadowed by the case studies, examples, etc.
from the context of biomedical research. Naturally, the regulations are
applied to all human subjects research, regardless of whether it is
biomedical or social research. But I believe there is an opportunity to
assist smaller institutions with understanding and implementing changes
which have occurred recently.

Thanks, Barb. I think your approach is the best. It does seem we should
have something out there but if not - what we can access through NIH and
OHRP is probably sufficient. I have both of these sites and have used them
BUT I have not taken the time or made the effort to pull out relevant
pieces and use them as training materials and handouts to researchers. I
am setting up a series of workshps over the fall semester - thus all the
questions! I think I will use your good advice and make handouts that are
relevant to VSU from the materials available. Thanks again.

Mary
