new NIH forms Charlie Hathaway 11 Jul 2001 14:05 EST

Hi-

Many of you are aware that NIH has released its "5/01" versions of the PHS 398 and 2590 forms. These will be mandatory after 9 Jan 02.

Between now and then applicants will have a choice: use the 4/98 version with its instructions or use the 5/01 with its instructions.

The issue, certainly for applicants and perhaps for reviewers, is that the new 5/01 instructions call for different Biosketch page limits (4 pages in new format vs 3 in old modular format vs 2 in old non-modular format), subtle changes in research plan page limitations for human subjects research (i.e. women, minorities, children comments no longer part of the 25 pages), and inclusion of manuscripts in the Appendices ONLY if accepted for publication (the old instructions permitted manuscripts "submitted for publication").

I doubt that all this will impact our national efforts to fight disease. But investigators may want to consider the relative tactical benefits of the 2 forms during the next cycle.
