The University of Kansas Center for Research announces two openings for
Contract Specialists (official title is Program Assistant).

Office of Contract Negotiations and Research Compliance /KU Center for
Research

Program Assistant

Contract Negotiations and Research Compliance is a department within the
office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Public Service and the KU
Center for Research.  It is responsible for negotiating award terms and
conditions of sponsored agreements prior to acceptance by the university;
monitoring research compliance issues, and preparing and negotiating
subrecipient agreements.  It manages approximately 750 agreements annually
and plays a significant role in the administration of about $150 million in
sponsored proposals and $80 million in awards for research and training.
This is a key position in the office's daily, administrative operations.

DUTIES:
Contract Management.  Tasks include:
 *       Review contracts from external sponsors for
compliance with University policies
 *       Negotiate contract terms and conditions in
accord with University research policies, including classified research,
intellectual property, liability and indemnification, publication rights and
licensing
 *       Prepare subrecipient agreements and
communicate and negotiate with subrecipient organizations as needed
 *       Communicate verbally and in writing with
attorneys and administrators in the Federal, State and Local governments, as
well as private corporations and foundations
 *       Use high-level analytical skills and make
independent decisions on topics of vital importance to the University
research community

Research education of faculty and staff.  Tasks include:
 *       Assist with the organization and
presentation of educational workshops and conferences for faculty, staff and
administrators on a variety of research administration topics
 *       Communicate with and educate faculty and
staff on topics covered in the Federal Government's Responsible Conduct of
Research initiative

Participate in areas of research compliance.  Tasks Include:
 *       Act as a resource person for faculty and
staff for specific concerns and questions related to the University
Classified Research Policy
 *       Review contractual language for its
acceptance under university's Classified Research Policy
 *       Work with faculty and researchers to prepare
Classified Research requests and oversee the process of obtaining the
Classified Research Committee's approval for specific requests for delays of
publication
 *       Additional duties related to research
compliance as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Bachelor's degree
2.  Strong verbal and written communication skills
3.  Familiarity with University policies and procedures or similar systems
4.  Experience in basic operation of microcomputers, including word
processing, databases, and spreadsheets

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 1.      Two years experience in sponsored projects
administration of grants and contracts strongly preferred
 2.  Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
 3.  Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret federal or state
regulations
 4.  Experience with implementation of research policies
 5.  Advanced degree (Master's, MBA, Ph.D. or JD)
