PI hiring their own children
Farnsworth, Franci 23 Apr 2001 08:31 EST
We have no nepotism policies and numerous situations of staff and faculty
supervising their own children in summer positions, research and otherwise.
I know PI's in the past have hired their own children with grant funds and
no one has "caught" it. This time, I've been asked by a PI whether she
can hire her high school child with grant funds this summer and we're trying
to determine appropriate procedures. At a minimum, we will require that
all paperwork and time cards be signed by the department chair (or other
appropriate administrator). When a PI wants to pay a spouse, we require
them to send a "family relationship disclosure" form to the agency
(consistent with college policy requiring that these relationships be
disclosed in all proposals which are designed to have both spouses involved
in the research). We could treat this situation similarly, but because
we're talking about a high school student I was asked to determine how
other institutions would handle this situation.
