Records retention for copyright Sally Eckert-Tilotta 05 Apr 2001 15:43 EST

The state has been forcing our institution into developing a comprehensive records retention policy. We were doing ok until they came and asked us about copyrighted materials. Now, the institution doesn't have the copyright on many materials because they are generally produced by faculty who retain copyright (or give it away to publishers). But we do have a few, and may have more, depending on a few IP decisions coming up. Copyrights, as you probably know, are in effect for a term of Life of the Author + 70 years. Where there are multiple authors, the 70 years begins after the life of the last surviving author. This timeframe makes it very difficult to assign a
workable retention timeframe.

QUESTION: what are institutions using as a retention policy for copyrighted materials that the institution owns?
