"LoveLetter" Virus on RESADM-L....
Mike Varney [List Owner] 29 Aug 2000 07:47 EST
As some of you had determined and emailed either myself or the list, a message
sent to the list on 8/28 (Monday) at about 3AM did include the LoveLetter virus,
in the form of an attached visual basic script named "Very Funny.vbs". I would
encourage everyone, especially those using Microsoft Outlook or those who
actually clicked on the attachment and ran it, to scan their machines with the
latest versions of their antivirus programs.
On a related note, there have been a couple emails to me from your email
administrators regarding the possibility that the listserv on HRINET.ORG is
infected itself. Not to worry... it is not running software that is capable of
doing anything with the VBS files. It is, unfortunately, more than willing to
pass the email along to everyone on the list.
And to head off a couple followup questions... the RESADM-L list IS
unmoderated. Meaning that there was no human intervention in the virus
attachment going out - - not by myself, the ListServ or by in this case Debbie
Smith - - the VBS viruses have a grand old time forwarding themselves along to
anyone interested without human intervention even by the sender.
