Does anyone have the current NIH definitions of "basic research" vs
"clinical" research?" I emailed several NIH offices about a week ago but
have not received a response from any of them.
Also, are there standard definitions to differentiate between "grants,"
"contracts," and "sponsored agreements?" Do these definitions vary with the
institution? At our institution, grants (no substantial programmatic
involvement per NIH Grants Policy Statement) are either federal or
non-profit (though at my former institution, there were also
industry-sponsored grants), contracts are usually federal, and sponsored
agreements are usually industry-sponsored or non-profit agencies other than
federal.
These may sound like dumb questions, but I must submit definitions to a
hospital committee; some members do not use these terms as household words
as we do (and I don't have much time to do it!).
Thanks for any help anyone can provide. (I have the NIH Grants Policy
Statement Definitions but they are slanted only toward NIH and do not give
definitions of "contract" and "sponsored agreement.")
