 Discussion List

Our university recently converted from a negotiated Facilities and
Administrative Costs rate of 48.4% on salaries and wages to 42% of total
modified direct costs. With that and a change of administration, we are
re-examining the allocation of those funds. To contribute to this
discussion, I am compiling information from other universities. If the
response merits, I would be happy to post the results to the list -
without naming your university, if you prefer.  The questions follow;
please send your answers to xxxxxx@uoft02.utoledo.edu. Your help is
GREATLY appreciated!

In allocating indirect cost recovery funds at your institution, what
percentage goes to the following categories:
_____25%___ General Fund -- Administrative costs
________ Internal Seed Grant Programs
_____10%___ P.I.'s College
_____15%___ P.I.'s Dept
________ P.I.
________ Other (please specify)
_____35% -- Grants Office -- Pays clerical costs and operating costs
(Sometimes grant seed money)
_____15% -- Library

If a portion of funds goes to Internal Seed Grant Programs, roughly what
portion goes to the following categories:

________ Start-Up Funds for New Faculty
________ Competitive Awards for Junior Faculty
________ Competitive Awards for Senior Faculty
________ Other (please specify)

______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________

If a portion of funds goes to Internal Seed Grant Programs, has your
institution estimated the success in leveraging external funds? ____ Yes
_____ No

If yes, what is the estimated ratio of investment to leveraged sponsor
award (e.g. 1:3, 1:5, 1:7)? If some other system of evaluation was used,
please indicate.
________

Secondary Questions:

________ What is your university's total sponsor award per year?

What is your federally negotiated Facilities and Administrative Cost rate
and basis?
________% (rate) Basis: (circle one) Salaries and Wages TMDC MDC
Other

If you would not object to your institution being named with the answers
above, please indicate your institution here:

(If left blank, your institution's answers will be given as Institution A
(B,C, etc.) when the results are posted to RESADM.)
