Re: How many hours do you work?

Interestingly, Minnesota is in the proces of determining which employees
state-wide are actually exempt and which aren't. This by order of the U.S.
Department of Labor, which is applying the Fair Labor Standards Act to all
state public employees. The feds have very specific guidelines as to
classifying positions exempt or non-exempt. The state has not. So all
university administrators and staff that aren't faculty, cabinet-level or
clerical/maintenance employees have been required to do "positive time
reporting" for the past three months...this in case we are discoverd to be
non-exempt and eligible for overtime to be "back-paid" to January 12, 1998.
So, I'm very aware of hours worked.
Anyway I think you will find a wide variance from state to state on how
they handle "exempt" employees based on collective bargaining agreements
and between individual institutions and individual departments based on
local philosophies and management styles.
1. How many hours, on average, do you and or your staff work per week?
I work anywhere from 40-50 depending on deadlines and special events;
the average is 45.
I only have a half-time clerical assistant.
2. Does your office allow compensatory and/or flex time? If so, how is this
handled/reported?
This has never been reported/counted for exempt employees.
It's really more of a by-department honor system. It depends upon the
individual supervisor.
3. Does your office require you to take sick/vacation hours for personal
appointments that are scheduled during the work day?
Our contract gives us sick/vacation/personal leave days which must be
reported.
But for something like a one hour appointment, I just work through
lunch or stay late that day. It's never been questioned.
