Hm, I distinctly remember being told in 1989 at a MacWorld conference that
very soon, we would never have any problems with "Mac vs PC"
issues. "Everything will be transparent," said the experts. ;)
I agree with Rusty. If ERA represents a "final frontier" in research
administration, then personal computer preference (Mac vs PC) represents
something of a final frontier within ERA. I had major problems at my
previous institution where we ran into proposal submission glitches due to
incompatibilities (i.e. proposal preparer had a Mac, but proposal reviewer
had a PC, etc) right before deadline. Since proposal submission can be
tense enough as it is, it's extremely valuable to have ways of making those
incompatibilities disappear quickly.
Perhaps these two separate yet related issues (personal computer
preference; and how to vanquish Mac vs PC incompatibilities) might be
appropriate for a panel discussion or workshop at one of the major research
conferences.
Sincerely,
Glenn
