I have a question for those of you in smaller, less research-focused
institutions, especially those with heavy faculty teaching loads (although
relevant comments from research institutions are certainly welcome).
What are your institution's policies or practices regarding releasing
faculty from teaching responsibilities to work on grant-funded projects?
In particular, I'm interested in knowing whether you have policies regarding:
(1) how much of an individual faculty member's time he or she can spend on
grants; and
(2) how faculty released to grants are replaced -- are they replaced
strictly by adjuncts or can temporary "core" faculty members be hired by
schools or departments to cover not just teaching responsibilities, but
also other kinds of work that faculty do (committee work, student advising,
etc.)
In your responses, it would be helpful to note what your "typical" faculty
teaching load is.
Thanks.
