 Associate Director - Research
 University of Minnesota

The Vice President for Research of the University of Minnesota invites
applications and nominations for the position of Associate Director of the
Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA), with the opportunity to
advance into the Associate Vice President of Research position within the next
few years. The University of Minnesota has been recognized as a long-time
leader in scientific research, and is striving to become recognized as a leader
in research administration. The university is currently developing and
implementing a sponsored projects management program that will not only launch a
new paradigm for the university research community, but will also establish a
new standard for research administration. This new program includes a
significant investment in resources, such as the development and implementation
of a web-based electronic grants management system.

SPA supports the mission of the university by managing over $350 million in
sponsored research, training, and public service expenditures. SPA is crucial
to the success of the new management program and is responsible for leading the
development and implementation of many aspects of the program.

Responsibilities: The Associate Director of SPA has full operational
responsibility for SPA. As the University of Minnesota continues to develop and
implement the new management program, the Associate Director will have primary
responsibility for transforming SPA?s operational environment. The current SPA
leadership has initiated operational improvement projects and the newly
appointed Associate Director of SPA will be empowered to fully implement these
efforts. These projects are focused on the many facets of the SPA organization:
business processes, systems development, structural relationships and human
resource development. The Associate Director will also be responsible for
developing and implementing new policies and procedures required by changes in
federal and/or state regulations. The Associate Director has responsibility to
oversee the hiring and training of new professional staff, as well as ensure the
continuing education, development, and evaluation of current staff. Because of
the University?s leadership position in developing and implementing an
electronic grants management system, the Associate Director will be responsible
for participating in national forums and discussions surrounding federal policy
in electronic grants administration.

Qualifications: The selected individual must hold a baccalaureate degree,
although an advanced degree is preferred. A minimum of five years experience in
grants administration is required. The successful candidate will have a job
history showing progressive increases in responsibility and will have
demonstrated skill in working effectively with faculty, staff, and external
constituents. Outstanding communication, customer service, and problem solving
skills are essential. The successful candidate must also proactively embrace
the use of technology in administrative applications. The individual filling
this position will likely be a strong candidate for more senior research
administration positions as retirements occur in future years; as a result,
individuals looking for career advancement are encouraged to apply.

Appointment: This position is a full-time, annually renewable, Professional and
Administrative (P&A) appointment. The selected individual will report to the
Associate Vice President for Research.

Application Process: Nominations and/or applications will be reviewed beginning
on May 1, 2000 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications
must include a letter of interest that addresses the position responsibilities,
a resume and contact information of three references. Send applications and
nominations to: Scott McConnell, Search Committee Chair, University of
Minnesota; 420 Johnston Hall; 101 Pleasant Street SE; Minneapolis, MN 55455.

The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity educator and employer.
