Manager of Grant and Contract Development
Marshall University
Marshall University seeks an experienced grants professional to provide
university-wide leadership in development and growth of sponsored program
activities. Sponsored programs awards have been growing steadily at
Marshall, and are expected to exceed $20 million in fiscal year 2000. The
Manager of Grant and Contract Development oversees a small group of grant
development professionals, and reports to the Director of Sponsored Programs
(who also serves as Executive Director of the Marshall University Research
Corporation). Also reporting to the Director of Sponsored Programs are the
Managers for Grant Administration and Compliance, Finance Administration,
and Personnel and Payroll. Salary is competitive and based on
qualifications. The position is funded through the Marshall University
Research Corporation and is currently available. Review of applications will

Responsibilities of this position are to oversee and contribute to the
following activities: assist faculty and staff in the development of grant
and contract proposals (identify sponsors, review guidelines, edit
applications, prepare budgets, and process and submit proposals); foster a
supportive environment for research, grant writing, and externally funded
activities; provide leadership in developing interdisciplinary,
institutional, and inter-institutional projects; establish relationships
with officers at major public and private funding agencies to facilitate
funded support; maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise in
federal/state/private funding regulations and policies; contribute to
continuing growth of Marshall's external funding, and thus to the
institution's contributions in education and outreach.
Required qualifications include: Master's degree; minimum of five years of
successful grants experience in an academic institution; knowledge of
research compliance regulations; negotiations with federal, state and
private sponsors; excellent organizational skills; excellent interpersonal,
oral and written communication skills.
Preferred qualifications include: Doctoral degree; faculty experience in
higher education-including funded research; grant experience with NIH and
NSF; previous supervisory experience.
