Gift, Grant, or Whatever? Marcia Landen 29 Feb 2000 09:32 EST
UPCOMING SRA TELECONFERENCE Mark Your Calendars and Reserve Your Space!!!! SRA is collaborating with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and PricewaterhouseCoopers to bring you a live satellite teleconference entitled, "Gifts, Grants, Or Whatever? Determining How Contributions Should Really Be Counted". Date: March 28, 2000 Time: 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm EST Place: Your Institution or Organization The teleconference will explore the legal, ethical, fiscal and regulatory issues related to appropriately recording institutional gifts, grants and other types of external support. Four prerecorded scenarios will be aired and discussed by panels of experts, and will address the following topic areas: 1. Endowment and Challenge Grants: Do we count state arts money as a gift or a grant? 2. Entrepreneurial Researchers: What if the Faculty member owns a company and donates to his/her research program? 3. Clinical Trials: Should a contribution to a clinical investigation ever be a gift? What if the researcher is a consultant for the sponsor? 4. Pouring Rights: When is it a gift vs. a contractual arrangement? In deciding whether this program is for you (and all of your colleagues who handle external support), consider the following questions: Are you confident that you would recognize all of the issues presented in these types of situations? Given that many of the issues fall into troublesome gray areas, do you feel confident that you would have the best answers? Since the cost is only $600 per satellite downlink, this is a very cost effective way to make valuable information available to all of the interested individuals in your institution or organization. For more information and to register, visit the SRA web site at http://sra.rams.com (and click on the SRA/CASE Teleconference button). If you have questions, please feel free to call the SRA Executive Office at 202-857-1141. Note: Please feel free to share this information with legal officers, development officers, business officers, faculty and graduate students within your institution or organization. The participation of all individuals who may be involved in receiving and classifying external financial support is very desirable. If your institution is a university, please be aware that a postcard has also been sent to members of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
