The College of Arts & Letters, University of Notre Dame, invites applications for the position of Research Administrator in the Social Sciences in the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts (ISLA.)

OVERVIEW
To work closely with faculty in the College of Arts & Letters in locating appropriate funding sources for research and to assist faculty in the development of external and internal grant proposals, with special responsibility for proposals in the social sciences. We especially welcome applications from people who are active researchers and are willing to submit grant applications for support of their research.

Assist faculty in obtaining external funding
=Assist faculty in proposal writing and budget preparation, with special responsibility for social science proposals.
= Present proposal writing workshops for faculty in the social sciences or organize workshops by outside experts, esp. NSF or NIH program officers.
= Critique draft proposals with eye to adequacy of literature review, research methodology, theoretical framework, and other proposal criteria.
= Route proposals through the proper University channels and make sure all university and funding agency requirements are met.
= Help write institutional proposals for the social sciences.
= Create computerized templates for funding agency forms and budget spreadsheets, as needed, using Excel, MS Word, or PDF files.

Disseminate information to faculty in the College of Arts & Letters
= Produce and edit a regular newsletter which informs faculty of grant opportunities and maintain print and electronic grant resource library, esp. on the WWW.
= Maintain faculty interest database to target grant opportunities to specific faculty members.
= Review and analyze funding guidelines and program announcements from government agencies, research institutes, and private foundations for appropriateness to and compatibility with the research interests of Arts & Letters faculty.
= Educate faculty on the use of our computer-based subscriptions to IRIS and Community of Science, as well as the resources of our own WWW homepage.
= Maintain a resource library, both print and electronic, which contains application guidelines, applications, and general information on funding sources.

Internal Grant Programs:
Assist Director in administering internal grant programs for social scientists (pilot fund, social science panel for Annual Awards).

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in the social sciences; advanced degree preferred. At least three years professional experience in higher education beyond the bachelor's degree. Experience as a researcher with large data sets is highly desirable.

Other skills:
Must be computer savvy.  Knowledge of the Macintosh computer and software programs Microsoft Word, Excel, creation of PDF documents, and Netscape.  Must be able to learn new technology quickly.  Familiarity with NSF Fastlane, trends in electronic research administration, and IRIS and Community of Science grant databases.

Must have experience working with university faculty, must comprehend and appreciate the mission of a research university, and have excellent writing skills.  Must have excellent organizational, budgetary, computer, communication, phone, and people skills.  Must work well as member of a team. Must be capable of representing the University with outside funding agencies.

Salary:
$35,000 to $40,000, depending on experience, plus excellent medical, retirement, and educational benefits.
